"Marxism focuses on the material/historical forces - the politics and ideologies of socioeconomic systems - that shape psychological experiences and behavior of individuals and groups." (Tyson 61)
Marxism on Hansel and Gretel
"The old woman had only pretended to be so friendly. She was really a wicked witch, who lay in wait for children." (Tatar 188). The witch represents the higher social class (wealth) while the children represent the lower/poor. It is to be read through Marxism that wealthy is what keeps the poor, poor. because they are about a facade of power/money.
"In every corner there were chests filled with pearls and jewles."Marxist theory touches base about the oppressed rising up against the oppressor in this case the children rising over the witch/stepmother, which happens in the end when they become wealthy from the jewelry they took. it shows how wealthy the withch really was.
"Marxist analysis of human events/productions focuses on relationships among socioeconomic classes, both within and among societies." (Tyson 52)
Hansel and Gretel grew up poor, resulting in the mother less worried about food on the table for all to eat she was more worried about herself than others. the society of the poor was about trying to make ends meet to get through another day, of living on the lower spectrum of the class system.
On page 56 of Tatar says that classism is an ideology that equates one's value as a human being with the social class one belongs to. The children are seen as nothing to their stepmother, because she wants to survive instead of all of them starving.
The theory focuses on power and money, and who has and who doesn't plus the results of it. "Members of the underclass and the lower class are economically oppressed: they suffer the ills of econ. privation, are hardest hit by recessions, and have limited means of improvement. (Tyson, 53)
Hansel and Gretel's stepmother wants to get rid of them, so her and the father will not starve to death. this shows they are living on the low end of the class system. They are poor.
